Charlottesville's Youngest Racer

My race attire for the Charlottesville half marathon
Yep! You read it right. Baby on Board! I'm pregnant and due the middle of September. Ken and I are so excited. It has certainly been an adjustment being pregnant and not always feeling my best. During the first trimester I was lucky that nausea and fatigue were the worst of my symptoms.  Now at 18 weeks I am feeling pretty good. My bump is starting to look like I'm preggo. Thank goodness in my profession I can wear lots of yoga pants, because my jeans stopped fitting many weeks ago.
All of this is so new. I can easily loose hours researching and reading blogs and books trying to figure out what I need to do and what I need to buy. I'm excited to start decorating the nursery and not looking forward to braving big stores like Babies R Us. I just need to remind myself to keep it simple. Just as it's easy to walk into a local bike shop or REI and be overwhelmed with all that is being marketed to the consumer, baby stores operate in the same way. Here are all the things you could possibly need. I'm thinking hand me downs, garage sales and Craigslist might be the way to go for a lot of things. 
2013 is going to be a very exciting year. Thankfully I'll have lots of lakes to float in while I cheer on Ken at the local triathlon scene. 
Charlottesville Race Weekend Recap
On Thursday, our group arrived in Howardsville, Virginia.After unpacking our bags and filling up the fridge, we settled into our accommodations. This sprawling rural Virginia house was beautiful and lovingly restored. Some of its highlights were the massive kitchen, ping pong table and comfy places to lounge around. A few of us hadn't stopped for dinner on trip and headed out to the next town for dinner. Early bed times were the norm and expected.
On Friday morning, the group headed out for a scenic 3 mile run to loosen up the legs after travel and prepare for Saturday's race. I stayed back, in part because my body currently doesn't do well with consecutive days of running and to assemble breakfast.

Charlottesville Half Marathon Race Report 
Arriving in downtown Charlottesville, we were able to stay warm in the ice rink. I scanned the door for my Dad, who was running the race too. We planned to run together, but failed to determine a meeting site. With ten minutes til race start, our group headed to the start line. Somehow in the sea of 500 plus people, I found my Dad. I was happy that the marathoners and half marathoners started together and followed much of the same course until the final 2 miles of our race. Final good lucks and fist pumps were given to the Get Out N Play athletes. Then the race was under way. Read more here...
Dip N Dash!
Dip N Dash Details: Monday evenings in Morris CT on Bantam Lake. A summer swim/run race series.
Race Dates and Distances:
  • June 3rd - 400 yd Swim & 5K Run
  • June 17th - 400 yd Swim & 5 mile Run
  • July 1st - 500 yd Swim & 5K Run
  • July 15th - 500 yd Swim & 5 mile Run
  • July 29th - 600 yd Swim & 5K Run
  • August 12th - 600 yd Swim & 5 Mile Run
Registration opens at 6 PM, with a race start of 6:45 PM.The race will be chip timed by Timing Plus New England. The weekly race entry fee is $25. Course maps will be available soon on the the Get Out N Play website
Each week we'll also feature a kids race, The Little Dippers!All children under 12 are welcome to swim/dash across the roped off swimming area and then run a 1/2 mile around the ball fields for a race of their own. The Little Dippers race is free with a paid adult entry or $10 otherwise. 
One Day Swim Race: Bantam Lake  
Sunday, June 16th: Bantam Lake, Morris CT
Race options: 1,2, or 3 mile race, with the option to swim multiple races
Recipe: Spiced Fruit Salad
We had a large group of runners and significant others staying at the house in Charlottesville for the race. Creating a menu to serve 18 people is not an easy task. Fortunately my friend and fellow IIN health coach Christine Lynch was able to help me out and offer me some suggestions and guidance. Her perspective of serving a buffet of food was a god-send and saved me from making eight pans of Bagel Strata. I really liked this simple fruit salad recipe and think it would be a great addition to a Mother's Day breakfast. 

  • Various fruits (I used oranges, apples, bananas and grapes) 
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon 
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla


1. Cut the fruit into bite sized pieces. 

2. Combine all the ingredients and let them sit together at room temperature for 15 minutes.
