There is a airport in Norfolk, Virginia (ORF), 17 miles from Virginia Beach. Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, 50 minutes away, is another consideration when planning your travel.How far away is Virginia Beach?Virginia Beach is a nine hour drive away from Hartford, CT.Are meals provided?Aubrey, with Bill’s assistance, will be cooking dinner on Friday, breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday. Our plan is to go out to a dinner as a group on Sunday evening to celebrate the race. Since we are staying in a house with a fully equipped kitchen, you will have the option to make your own additional meals, saving you money instead of relying on meals in restaurants.Will I have my own room?Yes, you will have your own room. The bathrooms will be be shared among those staying in the house.What is the marathon course like?The marathon course takes you south from the Virginia Beach resort area across Rudee Inlet–the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean–and through stately neighborhoods and the Camp Pendleton military base before returning north along the oceanfront and past more welcoming residential areas. It then traverses tree-lined Shore Drive adjacent to First Landing State Park on its way to Joint Expeditionary Base, Ft. Story. In Ft. Story participants will pass by the site where John Smith, Christopher Newport, John Rolfe and the other Jamestown colonists first landed in America in 1607, and by Cape Henry lighthouse–the oldest standing lighthouse in the United States. The course then heads south again for a finish on the world famous Virginia Beach boardwalk, just past the majestic figure of King Neptune, and with the beautiful Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. The marathon course is flat and fast and the perfect place for a PR (personal record).Visit the race website to view the course map. What if I want to coordinate my own lodging?A great thing about Virginia Beach is the abundance of lodging choices. You are welcome to arrange your own accommodations and travel to suit your needs and time frame. You are welcome to join the camaraderie of the group on occasions when it appeals to you.Can my spouse/significant other come along too?They are welcome to come along and share your bed in the house. There is an additional fee of $150.What is there to do in Virginia Beach?Virginia Beach is an exciting beach city right on the Atlantic. It is probably a good thing that we are visiting during the off season, so you can relax and stay off your feet leading up to the race. Check out the race Expo on Saturday. It claims to be one of the largest on the East Coast.What will the temperature be like on race day?Hopefully it will be warmer and sunnier in Virginia Beach, than it will be in the Northeast. Anything is possible, but the average high is 58 for that time of year, compared to 37 in Hartford, CT.When does the training program start?Training for the 20 week program begins on Sunday, November 2nd.When and where are the group workouts?The workouts will be Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM and Sunday mornings at 8 AM. The training locations will vary based on where the participants live. Most workouts will be in the Farmington Valley region.Do I have to attend all the workouts?We realize your life is busy, but we strongly encourage you to attend the weekly workouts. During group sessions you’ll get the benefit of the coach’s wisdom, training tips and encouragement from the group.What is the structure of the training?After the initial two week assessment period, we’ll move into a block of strength and conditioning, followed by a mileage build up and finishing up with some speedier sessions. Long runs, track workouts, tempo runs and hill workouts will all be part of your training program. Long runs will typically be done on Sundays.What kind of shape do I need to be in now?Before the start of the program, you should be comfortable with a long run of 6 miles and a weekly mileage total of 18 miles.What if I don’t live nearby the Hartford area, but want to be coached from a distance and travel to Virginia for the race? |
